Art Clocks – From Physical to Video
Ken Wilkinson makes clocks like you’ve never seen before. Artful, crafty, humorous, and sometimes just head scratching.
He has a star shaped clock with hands that slide up and down the points. One is a kaleidoscope with the face and hands lost within it. Another is a roller coaster ride. One clock is in a head and one has 4 hour and minute hands. There’s a clock where 7 people and a dog give the time. And a clock that uses color to show the time. Also, there is one where each hand is on a different wall.
Hard to imagine. They can be seen at the Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Gallery at the Benicia Public Library from May 14 to June 20. Hours: Monday-Thursday 10a.m. to 9p.m. Friday-Sunday Noon to 6p.m. There will be a reception Saturday June 1, from 1 to 3 PM. He expects to have free video clock thumb drives available at the reception.
This all started in 2009 when Ken embarked on a journey exploring the essence and limits of what makes clocks what they are. Initially he made clocks using wood, Plexiglas, photographs or whatever he came up with. His focus was to make them interesting both visually and conceptually, not just functional. After a couple years he included writing fiction as a way to explore clock ideas he was unable to create. What evolved was a story, with a wealth of interesting ideas, about a world of very strange clocks. Clocks that used color or music to give the time. Ten base time and time based food. Clothes, animals and dance as clocks. Clocks that reference geography or stories to measure time. Most ideas were fantastical, some were remotely achievable. Two ideas intrigued him: code-based clocks that are drawn on the fly and clocks that use video to show the time. In 2015 he stopped making physical clocks and moved on to explore these screen-based clocks. The exhibition at the Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Gallery at the Benicia Public Library is a combination of his physical clocks and his video clocks.
